Hard Water in South Florida: Why Scale Shows Up So Fast
Hard water is water with elevated dissolved calcium and magnesium. It is usually an aesthetic and household-performance issue, not the same thing as an unsafe-water finding.
Why South Florida can have noticeable mineral issues
Florida groundwater moves through carbonate rock such as limestone and dolostone. Those geologic conditions can contribute dissolved minerals to groundwater. The exact hardness at your house still depends on the water source, treatment plant and distribution system serving the property.
Florida DEP commonly classifies water as moderately hard at 75–150 mg/L as CaCO₃, hard at 150–300 mg/L, and very hard above 300 mg/L. Those categories are useful context, but the number that matters for sizing a softener is the water actually serving your home.
What a water softener does
A conventional ion-exchange softener is designed specifically to reduce hardness. That is different from a drinking-water filter. Whole-home hardness treatment is typically installed where water enters the property so the showers, fixtures and appliances receive treated water.
Why Wavo tests first
South Florida is not one uniform water system. Palm Beach County alone uses different source-water and treatment approaches across its service territory. A local water report is useful background; an in-home test helps match the equipment and settings to the property.
